Group Knowledge Building Online

Respectful listening to others and building on the insights of others is an important part of authentic inquiry.  This blog has been created to carry on some of the conversations provoked at the September 22 ProD event.

As facilitator I will start threads on a few selected topics.  If you want to expand these, just email me and we can do that.  Better yet you can provide the content for the posting as well.

For this post you might comment on how to maximize online group knowledge building through this and other tools.

Some Simple Protocols

This is not a classic Knowledge Building Circle but some protocols do apply:
-be respectful of what other people say.
-use respectful language "I want to build on what Bob has to said ..."  or " I have a different view from Mary in that ..."

Google Drive folder for this event

you can have a look in the google drive folder for items related to the facilitated provocation:
-slides
-copy of DOTS
 and other items.

De-Privatizing Teaching

In our own professinal learning feelings matter a lot.  If we don't feel comfortable we clam up.  If we are expereicing some kind of professinal fear changing our practice will be much more difficult.

In our professional inquiry instutues we have had some very profound disucssions about professional fear that educators experience.  This is a testament to who is in the room and how we are operating in that just acknowledging fears takes some trust.

Admitting you don't have all the answers to questions and challenges is often a good opener and truth be told we don't have all the answers or insights on the best ways to go about organizing learning for every student and circumstance.

Another trust builder is walking the the transformative learning talk.  Consistency is pretty important.  There are times when we will fall short and these are times when it is important to acknowledge our own contradictions.  We all have them.

What are some of the sources of professional fear that you have noticed?  How can we create professional environments with the levels of trust needed to reduce those fears?
